A natural evolution of the Honda T360 mini truck, the Honda Acty first appeared in 1977 as a cabover Kei class mini truck. Throughout the generations, the Acty truck and van has had many different specs and special editions, including a 6 wheeled Crawler edition! The Honda Acty has become a favorite for tuners, farmers, and everyday users alike. In some circles, it’s even called the NSX of the farm due to its shared “midship” engine placement. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of the various generations and specs of the Honda Acty Truck and Van.

Honda Acty First Generation: 1977-1987

The first generation of the Honda Acty Truck, called the TN-Acty, was the successor to Honda’s TN360 truck. It came with a 28HP, 545cc 2-cylinder engine, RWD, and a three-way opening truck bed. It also maintained the TN360’s “midship” format with the engine located just behind the cab. In 1979 Honda added a van variant to the Acty lineup. The Acty Van was later updated in 1980 with the now popular “Street” trim, which was targeted as a more luxurious version of the van with some creature comforts to prioritize passengers over cargo. Street models featured more carpeting and sound-deadening, as well as upgraded seats. A high roof version was made standard for the Acty Van, and as an option for the Acty Street as well. In 1983 Honda added a part-time 4×4 option to both truck and van models. Buyers could also get a 5-speed manual transmission for the first time on the Acty truck and Van. Street vans were optioned with new features such as 19 level reclining seats, rear climate zone heating, and a cooler box for refrigerated drinks. Later upgrades included front disc brakes, as well as some minor changes to the front fascia from 1984 to 1987.

Honda Acty Second Generation (Debut Model): 1988-1990

Honda completely redesigned the Acty Truck, Acty Van, and Acty Street for the 1988 model year. New models received the upgraded E05A, 550cc 3-cylinder engine. A three-speed automatic transmission was also offered in addition to the existing 5-speed manual.

Honda introduced its new Realtime 4WD system with this generation of Acty. This was an active 4×4 system that transferred power between the front and rear wheels through an advanced clutch system.

The styling was also updated, with the standard Acty Truck and Van receiving round headlights similar to the Honda City of the time. The Street Van received a more hexagonal shaped headlight setup that would later be adopted to the full lineup.

Initially there were 18 variations of trim levels, each offering distinct features and capabilities.

Honda Acty Second Generation (Refresh): 1990-1999

In 1990 the Honda Acty Truck, Acty Van, and Acty Street were upgraded again to receive the larger and more powerful E07A 656cc 3-Cylinder engine. This update coincided with most other manufacturers increasing the displacement of their kei-class engines due to a change in regulations by the Japanese government.

2WD models came with the option of a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission, while 4×4 models received a standard 5-speed manual. The Acty Attack and Acty Crawler received a 4-speed manual with Ultra Low forward and reverse gears. A 3-speed automatic was available only for the 2WD models.

The front fascia for the Acty Truck and Acty Van was also upgraded to match the trapezoidal face of the existing Acty Street van. Halogen headlights were also added as an option.

In 1990 there were 20 different variations of trim levels available across the Acty range. Throughout the 90’s more trims levels were introduced including some special models listed below:

Honda Acty Special Models

Acty Attack

The Acty Attack was an off-road focused trim level for the Acty Truck. The Attack featured 4WD with locking differentials (diff lock), as well as 4-speed manual with ultra low forward and reverse gears. This model was made especially for off-roading in rough and muddy terrain. It is the only Honda Acty trim with diff lock except for the Crawler.

Acty Crawler

The six-wheeled Crawler edition was released and sold in 1995 only, as a special edition model. Crawlers came equipped with a specially designed 6-wheel configuration. Other than the extra wheels, they were identical to the Attack. That means they came with a 4×4 drivetrain that included diff lock as well as the ultra low forward and reverse gears. Acty Crawlers also came with a set of tracks that wrapped around the rear wheels on each side to help it travel in snowy and muddy conditions. The Crawler is one of the rarest and most sought after kei truck models ever produced, and recent auctions have closed upwards of ¥1,000,000 for nice examples.

Fuel Injected Acty Street and Van Models

In 1993 Honda released a fuel injected version of the E07A 3-Cylinder engine and put it in some Acty Van and Street models. The EFI engine was available on the Fox and Xi trimmed vehicles only, in 2WD and 4WD configurations. They were sold simultaneously with the carbureted engines. For current buyers shopping for a fuel injected van, be sure to check that it’s a Fox or Xi trim, as those are the only 2nd generation Acty models equipped with fuel injected engines.

Honda Acty Third Generation: 1999-2010

In 1999 Honda released an all new Acty Truck and Acty Van. Notable improvements included a longer wheelbase, power steering, increased power, and better fuel efficiency. The Street van was cancelled with this update, and later replaced with a separate model, called the Vamos, to serve as the passenger focused van. The Town spec became the top level Acty model, with the most available features on truck and van models.

Honda also fitted driver’s seat airbags as standard equipment with an option for passenger airbags. Additional improvements to the overall design of the car improved the crash test ratings for passengers and pedestrian collisions.

With this update Honda released three different commercial series of the Acty Truck; The Powerful Series, The Fresh Delivery Series, and The Utility Series, that could be fitted with features to aid with business and commercial activities. Between the three commercial series, the Acty could be fitted with the following eight commercial-grade features:

For Acty dump trucks, buyers could get a standard deep bed, as well as a shallow bed. All features could be found with variations of 2WD, 4WD, automatic, and manual transmissions. There were also some Attack models that were fitted with dump beds and diff-lock. Dump beds came in the following four different variations:

In 2000, Honda introduced a new automatic transmission that was available on all models. This was the first time that a 4×4 Acty could be optioned with an automatic transmission. In addition to this, all models now came with a painted front bumper. Before, front bumpers were shipped unpainted.

In 2001 the length of the cargo bed on dump trucks was extended by 70mm, making it 1,940mm (6ft 4in) long. The maximum load of dump beds was also increased from 250kg (552lbs) to 350kg (772lbs). For Acty Vans, air conditioning became standard on all models. Additional options such as power front windows, tinted windows, and a rear heater were added to the lineup.

The Acty Truck and Van were offered in two colors, Taffeta White and Bay Blue. Later models received body-painted side-view mirrors as well as convex mirrors for better visibility around the vehicle.

Honda Acty Fourth Generation: 2010-Present

The fourth and current generation of the Honda Acty Truck was released in 2010. This generation kept the continuation of chassis codes with HA8 for 2WD models and HA9 for 4WD models. The Acty Van was not included in this update, and the previous generation (HH5 & HH6) continued to be made alongside the updated truck.

Improvements were largely evolutionary, and the Acty Truck maintained the same “midship” layout with the engine being placed behind the cabin under the bed of the truck. The wheel-wells were placed directly under the passenger seats to increase cabin space and make it easier to climb in and out of the truck. This move also shortened the wheelbase by 520mm from the previous generation.

Features were largely consistent with the previous generation. The range-topping Town spec now included optional keyless entry and power windows. Specs included the same 2WD and 4WD drivetrains, as well as the Attack version with Ultra Low forward and reverse gears combined with a 5-speed transmission and diff-lock. The commercial series trucks also continued to be sold with various applications for commercial use. Dump beds, cargo boxes, and lifts were all included with slight modifications for ease of use and efficiency.

Additionally, the Acty could be ordered with silver and black paint for the first time. Blue and white paint options were also still available.

Honda has indicated that the HA8 and HA9 will be the last generations of Honda Acty trucks, ceasing production in 2021.
